Hedge Funds experienced a pretty bumpy year in 2008 culminating with the Bernard Madoff scandal in America. However, even in these turbulent times, Hedge Funds can still be an attractive proposition for both individual and corporate investors as long as certain hurdles can be overcome. Traditionally the main obstacles to investing in Hedge Funds are:
· Risk of massive fluctuations and losing the entire amount invested
· Lack of regulation leading to scandals such as the Madoff affair
· Lack of access for individual investors due to excessively high minimum investment levels
· Lack of liquidity due to long “lock-in” periods
· Limited access to the best performing Funds due to them being closed to new investment
· Very high management fees and profit share fees
